Why Caffeine Affects Athletes So Differently

Caffeine's effect on performance varies between individuals because of how quickly it is metabolized, how receptors respond and how much habitual intake has already adapted them.

Caffeine is among the most studied performance-related compounds, and the average effect in research conceals a wide spread between individuals. That spread has identifiable causes.

How it acts on the nervous system

Caffeine resembles adenosine closely enough to occupy its receptors without activating them. Adenosine normally accumulates during wakefulness and dampens neural activity.

Blocking those receptors reduces the perception of effort and fatigue rather than increasing what the muscle can produce.

Because the effect operates through perception and central drive, it shows most clearly in efforts where the limit is tolerance rather than raw capacity.

Metabolism varies genetically

Caffeine is cleared primarily by a liver enzyme, and variation in the gene encoding it produces faster and slower metabolizers within the population.

Slower clearance means higher and longer-lasting blood levels from the same amount, which shifts both the potential benefit and the likelihood of side effects.

Receptor variation adds a second layer, influencing how strongly a given blood level translates into perceived alertness or into anxiety and jitteriness.

Habitual intake changes the baseline

Regular consumption leads to upregulation of adenosine receptors, so the same dose produces a smaller change relative to the person's usual state.

Whether withdrawing before competition restores responsiveness is contested, and abstaining can itself produce headache and fatigue that offset any gain.

What is clearer is that competition day is a poor time to try an unfamiliar approach, since individual responses are the variable that matters.

The side effects have practical costs

Increased heart rate, gastrointestinal stimulation and disrupted sleep are all common, and any of them can cost more than the perceptual benefit is worth.

Sleep disruption is the most underrated, since caffeine taken in the afternoon can still affect sleep architecture hours later, and recovery depends on that sleep.

Anxiety and tremor interfere directly with sports requiring fine motor control, which is why the compound is not uniformly useful across disciplines.

Where it sits in a plant-based diet

Coffee and tea are plant sources and are already part of many athletes' routines, so the question is usually about timing rather than introduction.

Coffee and tea also contain compounds that reduce non-heme iron absorption, which is relevant for plant-based athletes when consumed alongside iron-containing meals.

Any specific plan involving concentrated caffeine products belongs with a sports dietitian or physician, particularly for younger athletes and anyone with cardiac or anxiety history.
