Strength Nutrition Versus Endurance Nutrition
The two training types stress different systems and therefore have different nutritional priorities, which changes what a plant-based diet needs to emphasise.

Nutrition advice for athletes is often given as though all training were the same. Strength and endurance work impose different demands, and the plant-based version of each looks different.
What each type of training damages
Resistance training produces mechanical stress and microscopic damage to muscle fibres, and the adaptation is repair and enlargement of contractile protein.
Endurance training depletes fuel stores and stresses the systems delivering oxygen, and the adaptation involves mitochondrial density, capillary networks and blood volume.
The nutritional consequence follows directly: one adaptation is built primarily from protein, the other primarily needs fuel and the raw materials for blood and mitochondria.
The protein emphasis in strength work
Building contractile protein requires amino acids available in sufficient quantity and distributed across the day rather than concentrated once.
Plant proteins are somewhat lower in leucine per gram, so the practical adjustment is slightly larger servings drawn from concentrated sources.
Soy, seitan, lentils, tempeh and legume-based products carry enough per portion to make this straightforward without unusual quantities of food.
The fuel emphasis in endurance work
Endurance training is limited more often by carbohydrate availability and by total energy than by protein, though protein requirements are also raised.
Plant-based diets supply carbohydrate readily, and the constraint becomes volume rather than availability, which is where more refined sources around sessions become useful.
Iron matters more here than in strength work, because red cell turnover and losses through sweat and footstrike are higher, and plant iron is less readily absorbed.
What both share
Total energy adequacy underlies everything. Neither adaptation occurs properly when intake is chronically below expenditure, whatever the macronutrient split.
Both also depend on the nutrients that plant-based diets need to plan for regardless of sport: B12, vitamin D, iodine and long-chain omega-3.
Those are the ones where an athlete benefits from testing and professional interpretation rather than estimation, and a sports dietitian is the appropriate person for that.
Concurrent training and the middle ground
Most athletes do some of both, and the interference between the two adaptations is real but smaller than it was once thought.
Adequate fuel appears to reduce that interference, since much of it arises from competition for limited energy rather than from the training itself.
The practical position for a mixed athlete is to fuel the endurance work properly and protein the strength work properly, rather than choosing between the two priorities.
