Methionine, Glycine And The Balance Question
Sulphur amino acids and glycine sit in linked pathways, and plant-based diets tend to shift the ratio between them in ways researchers are still examining.

Discussions of plant protein usually stop at whether requirements are met. A separate line of research asks whether the ratio between certain amino acids matters independently, and plant diets shift that ratio.
Methionine and where it goes
Methionine is an essential amino acid and also the entry point to a metabolic cycle that supplies methyl groups for a wide range of reactions.
Once its methyl group is donated, the remainder becomes homocysteine, which is either recycled back to methionine using folate and B12, or converted onward to cysteine.
The cycle therefore links methionine intake, folate status and B12 status together. A shortfall in one shows up as a disturbance elsewhere in the pathway.
Why glycine is discussed alongside it
Glycine is the simplest amino acid and is used in collagen, in bile salts, and in the synthesis of glutathione and creatine.
It is classed as non-essential because the body synthesises it, but demand can exceed synthetic capacity, which is why some researchers describe it as conditionally essential.
Glycine also participates in clearing excess methionine through a separate route, which is the direct connection between the two and the basis for interest in their ratio.
How plant diets shift the balance
Legume proteins are relatively low in methionine, so plant-based diets generally supply less of it than diets containing substantial meat and eggs.
Collagen-rich animal foods are the richest glycine sources, and they are absent, though legumes, seeds, spinach and soy all contribute glycine in useful amounts.
The net direction of the shift depends heavily on what the diet is built from, which is one reason the research is difficult to summarise cleanly.
What the research does and does not show
Restricting methionine extends lifespan in several animal models, and that finding drives much of the interest in the topic.
Whether the effect translates to humans, and at what intakes, is unresolved. Animal longevity work has a poor record of transferring directly.
What is not in dispute is that methionine remains essential and that restricting it deliberately is not a self-directed project. It is a research question, not a dietary instruction.
The sensible position
A varied plant-based diet including legumes, whole grains, nuts and seeds supplies both amino acids in the amounts human requirements call for.
The pathway they share is more sensitive to B12 and folate status than to fine adjustments in amino acid ratios, which is where attention is better placed.
Anyone with a raised homocysteine result, or a reason to think this pathway is not working normally, needs a clinician to interpret it rather than a dietary rule of thumb.
