Creatine Stores And Where The Body Gets Them
Creatine buffers energy for very short efforts, and the body both synthesises it and absorbs it from food, which is where diet composition becomes relevant.

Creatine is the most discussed compound in sport nutrition and one of the few where plant-based and omnivorous diets differ measurably. The mechanism explains why.
The energy system it serves
Muscle contraction is powered by ATP, of which the muscle holds only a few seconds' worth at maximum output.
Phosphocreatine acts as a rapid reserve, donating a phosphate group to regenerate ATP almost instantly when demand spikes.
This system dominates for efforts lasting a handful of seconds: a sprint start, a heavy lift, a jump. Beyond about ten seconds other pathways take over.
Two sources of supply
The body synthesises creatine in the liver and kidneys from three amino acids: glycine, arginine and methionine.
The remainder comes from the diet, and dietary creatine is found almost entirely in animal muscle tissue. Plant foods contain essentially none.
Synthesis continues regardless, so plant-based eaters are not without creatine. Their muscle stores tend to sit lower than those of people who eat meat regularly.
Why lower stores are interesting
Muscle can hold more creatine than it typically contains, and the gap between typical and maximum is what any increase in supply would fill.
Because plant-based eaters generally start further from that ceiling, they have more room in the store than someone whose diet already supplies dietary creatine.
This is a statement about where the stores sit, not a recommendation. Whether to do anything about it depends on the sport, the individual and factors an article cannot assess.
The amino acid precursors
Synthesis draws on glycine, arginine and methionine, and it consumes a substantial share of the body's methyl groups, linking it to folate and B12 status.
A varied plant-based diet supplies all three amino acids, with legumes, soy, nuts and seeds contributing to each.
Very restricted diets or persistently low protein intake would constrain synthesis, which is one more reason total protein adequacy matters beyond muscle building.
Where a professional belongs
Anyone considering supplementation should discuss it with a sports dietitian or clinician, particularly if there is any kidney concern, other medication, or if the athlete is young.
Product quality varies and contamination is a real issue in competitive sport, where certification schemes exist precisely because it is.
