Choline And Why It Rarely Gets Discussed
Choline is required for cell membranes and for a major neurotransmitter, yet it sits outside the vitamin classification and is often missing from nutrition conversations.

Choline appears on few food labels and in few nutrition discussions, despite being an essential dietary component with a defined intake recommendation. Its odd classification is part of the reason.
Neither vitamin nor mineral
Choline was formally recognised as essential relatively recently, and it does not fit the vitamin categories cleanly because the body synthesises some of it in the liver.
That synthesis is real but insufficient for most people, which is why an adequate intake figure exists. It sits in an awkward middle ground between essential and conditionally essential.
Because it was recognised late, it was left out of older food composition tables and of many labelling requirements, so it is genuinely harder to track than most nutrients.
What the body does with it
Choline is the backbone of phosphatidylcholine, a phospholipid that makes up a large share of every cell membrane in the body.
It is also the precursor to acetylcholine, the neurotransmitter used at every junction between nerve and skeletal muscle, and widely in the brain.
A third role involves transporting fat out of the liver. Insufficient choline impairs the packaging of lipids for export, which is the mechanism behind fat accumulation in liver tissue under deficiency.
Where the richest sources sit
Eggs and liver are the densest sources in an omnivorous diet, which means a plant-based diet loses the two foods that would otherwise dominate intake.
Soy is the strongest plant source, with tofu, tempeh, soy milk and edamame all contributing. Cruciferous vegetables, quinoa, legumes, peanuts and wheat germ follow.
The distribution is broad but not concentrated, so meeting the recommendation on plants requires soy or legumes appearing regularly rather than occasionally.
Pregnancy and the raised requirement
Requirements increase in pregnancy and lactation because choline is drawn on heavily for fetal neural development and is transferred in breast milk.
Many prenatal formulations historically contained little or none, which means the assumption that a prenatal product covers everything does not necessarily hold here.
This is squarely a matter for an obstetric clinician or a registered dietitian. Intake in pregnancy should be planned with someone who can see the whole picture, not estimated from an article.
The gut bacteria complication
Gut bacteria convert some choline into a compound the liver then oxidises, and that downstream compound has been the subject of considerable cardiovascular research.
The picture is unsettled, and it varies with the composition of the gut community, which itself shifts with fibre intake. Firm conclusions are not yet available.
What is clear is that choline is required, that plant-based diets supply less of it by default, and that it deserves a place in the conversation it currently does not get.
