Carbohydrate Availability And Training Quality

Sessions that feel inexplicably heavy are frequently a fuel problem rather than a fitness problem. Carbohydrate availability determines what intensity is sustainable, through a fairly direct mechanism.

Where the fuel is stored

Carbohydrate is stored as glycogen, a branched glucose polymer, mostly in muscle and to a lesser extent in liver.

Muscle glycogen is available only to the muscle storing it, while liver glycogen maintains blood glucose for the brain and for muscles elsewhere.

Total storage capacity is limited to roughly a day's worth of energy, which is why it must be replenished continually and why it becomes limiting within a long session.

Why intensity depends on it

Fat oxidation supplies energy efficiently but slowly, because the pathway requires more oxygen per unit of energy and cannot be accelerated indefinitely.

Carbohydrate can be broken down without oxygen when required, which is what allows the rates of energy release that high-intensity work demands.

As glycogen falls, the achievable intensity falls with it. This is the physiological basis of the sudden ceiling that endurance athletes describe hitting.

What plant-based diets do here

Plant-based diets are naturally carbohydrate-rich, which suits endurance training well and is one of the clearer advantages of the pattern for that population.

The complication is bulk. Whole plant foods carry substantial fibre and water, so meeting a high carbohydrate requirement can mean an uncomfortable volume of food.

Around heavy training this is where more refined sources earn a place: white rice, pasta, fruit juice, dried fruit and simple carbohydrate around sessions.

The energy availability question underneath

If total energy intake is too low, glycogen cannot be replenished regardless of the proportion of carbohydrate in the diet.

Chronically insufficient energy intake affects hormonal function, bone health and immune function, and it develops quietly over months rather than announcing itself.

Any athlete who suspects this is the case needs a sports dietitian and a clinician rather than a self-directed adjustment, because the consequences are systemic.

Reading the signals

Persistent heaviness in sessions that used to feel fine, poor recovery between days, and disproportionate difficulty at higher intensities all point towards availability rather than fitness.

The distinguishing feature is that a genuinely well-fuelled athlete recovers within a day or two, while an underfuelled one does not recover regardless of rest.

Adjusting fuelling around sessions is easier to test than adjusting training, which makes it a sensible thing to examine first.
