Training twice a day on plants
Double sessions compress recovery and multiply energy requirements, which is where plant-based fuelling becomes genuinely demanding.

Twice-daily training is where the energy density problem becomes acute. Requirements are high, appetite is suppressed, and the window between sessions is short.
The specific challenges
Very high energy requirements, potentially several thousand calories daily, which is difficult to consume from bulky food.
Compressed recovery windows, where glycogen must be replaced within hours rather than by the next day.
Appetite suppression after hard training, exactly when eating matters most.
Gastrointestinal constraint, where high-fibre food before a second session causes problems.
Time, since athletes doing double sessions have limited hours for cooking and eating.
The between-session priority
Glycogen. This is the variable that determines whether the second session is any good.
Where the gap is short — under four hours — sports nutrition guidance suggests aggressive carbohydrate intake, commonly around one to one and a quarter grams per kilogram per hour.
For a seventy-kilogram athlete that is seventy to ninety grams an hour, which is a lot of food.
The practical solutions:
Drink it. A smoothie, a sports drink, fruit juice, chocolate soy milk. Liquid calories are absorbed quickly and do not fill you up the way solid food does.
Low fibre, low fat. White bread, white rice, bananas, dried fruit, jam, honey, sports products.
This is the situation where refined carbohydrate is correct and where wholegrain everything works against you.
Protein alongside, around twenty to thirty grams, which supports repair without slowing carbohydrate absorption meaningfully.
Fluid and sodium, replacing what was lost.
The daily energy problem
The bigger challenge over weeks.
Meeting very high energy requirements on plant food requires deliberate density.
Fat is the lever. Olive oil on everything. Nut butters by the spoonful. Avocado. Coconut milk in porridge and curries. Tahini in sauces.
Fat provides more than twice the energy per gram of the alternatives, and it does not fill you up the way fibre does.
Reduce fibre bulk relative to a general healthy-eating pattern. Some refined grains, fruit juice alongside whole fruit, smoothies rather than salads.
This is one of the few contexts where reducing fibre is correct advice.
Eat more often. Five or six substantial eating occasions rather than three.
Drink calories, which is the single most effective strategy when appetite is limiting.
A smoothie with soy milk, oats, banana, dates, nut butter and protein powder can deliver seven or eight hundred calories in a glass.
A day that works
For an athlete training morning and evening:
Pre-morning session: toast with jam and honey, a banana. Low fibre, easily digested.
During: carbohydrate drink if the session is long.
Immediately after: a large smoothie — soy milk, banana, dates, oats, nut butter, protein powder.
Breakfast proper, an hour later: porridge with soy milk, nut butter, dried fruit. Or leftovers.
Lunch: a substantial meal — rice, tofu, vegetables, plenty of oil.
Afternoon snack: nuts, dried fruit, a sandwich.
Pre-evening session: low fibre carbohydrate, two hours before.
After: recovery drink, then dinner.
Before bed: soy milk or soy yoghurt.
That is eight eating occasions, which is what high-volume training requires and which surprises people.
The warning signs
Athletes doing double sessions are at elevated risk of low energy availability, and the consequences are covered elsewhere on this site.
Watch for: performance declining, unusual fatigue, feeling cold, frequent illness, disturbed sleep, menstrual changes, reduced libido, and mood changes.
These indicate that intake is not keeping up, and the answer is more food rather than more discipline.
Stress fractures in particular are a signal that should not be attributed only to training load.
The micronutrient point
High training volume increases requirements for several nutrients, and the diet needs to deliver them alongside the energy.
Iron in particular, given losses in endurance athletes, and this is worth testing regularly.
Also: sodium, given sweat losses; calcium and vitamin D, given bone stress; and the standard plant-based supplements.
Where a large share of energy comes from refined carbohydrate for practical reasons, ensuring micronutrient density in the remaining meals matters more.
The practical summary
Prioritise carbohydrate between sessions, in liquid form, low fibre.
Increase energy density across the day with fat.
Eat more frequently than feels normal.
Test iron regularly.
And treat persistent fatigue as a fuelling problem before treating it as a training problem, because it usually is.
